My only grievance with the house is if a scent isn't an outright clone, they do an old 1980's/1990's Avon trick of mixing elements from several popular fragrances together, meaning the savvy wearer plays a guessing game of what has been mixed when smelling something from English Laundry of this nature. Of course, there is no hiding the synthetics or quality of ingredients used, but at least the amount of care taken with the compositions shows a level of craft not seen in most A-list designer masculines these days. The whole point of English Laundry seems to be a reversal of the "emperor's new clothes" aesthetic that many luxury-marketed niche houses employ: instead of taking something mainstream and adding a luxury twist then selling it at exorbitant prices with a prestige-focused sales pitch, English Laundry takes the luxury blending, performance and a facsimile of the presentation found in "haute parfumerie" and democratizes it. I’ve gotten my nose on more fragrance and realize this is safe and pretty generic.Įnglish Laundry Oxford Bleu (2014) is another clever amalgamation of designer accords blended with "luxury" levels of care and performance, presented at eau de parfum strength. I’m keeping the thumbs up rating, but less enthusiastic as before. Oxford Bleu is a way to smell great, smell rich, and experience a desirable end of the fragrance spectrum without breaking the bank.Įdited on 4/8/22. But who knows? EL frags don't seem to project or last like they used to. I have a newer bottle from the EL website, which I think is a higher quality than the ones from the rack stores. The dry down smells very nice, if not samey. Then after an hour or so, a smooth transition to the more sophisticated stage, with the woods and the herbs and whatever make BdC so damn intoxicating.

There’s powder here that softens everything, after the initial top note hit. Or maybe 30 years ago Saturday night, for us more mature men.

The sweetness up front is just a soft little reminder of last Saturday night. But it is generic, and not as nice as the juice it imitates.

It kinda does, and that’s not a bad thing. I've heard people suggest that this starts like Versace Eros and finishes like Bleu de Chanel.
